Pair production from nuclear collisions and cosmic ray transport
نویسنده
چکیده
Modern cosmic ray transport codes, that are capable of use for a variety of applications, need to include all significant atomic, nuclear and particle reactions at a variety of energies. Lepton pair production from nucleus-nucleus collisions has not been included in transport codes to date. Using the methods of Baur, Bertulani and Baron, the present paper provides estimates of electron-positron pair production cross sections for nuclei and energies relevant to cosmic ray transport. It is shown that the cross sections are large compared to other typical processes such as single neutron removal due to strong or electromagnetic interactions. Therefore lepton pair production may need to be included in some transport code applications involving MeV electrons. PACS numbers: 25.75.-q, 96.50.S-, 96.50.sb

Threshold meson production and cosmic ray transport
An interesting accident of nature is that the peak of the cosmic ray spectrum, for both protons and heavier nuclei, occurs near the pion production threshold. The Boltzmann transport equation contains a term which is the cosmic ray flux multiplied by the cross section. Therefore when considering pion and kaon production from proton-proton reactions, small cross sections at low energy can be as ...

Asymptotic behaviour of the total cross section of p − p scattering and the Akeno cosmic ray data ABSTRACT I present a new determination of the total cross section for proton-proton collisions from the recent Akeno [1] results on absorption of the cosmic ray protons in the pAir collisions. Extrapolation to the SSC energy suggests σ tot (p − p) ≈ (160 − 170) mb. I also comment on a possible sens...
متن کاملBaryon stopping in high energy collisions and the extrapolation of hadron production models to Cosmic Ray energies
A new striking feature of hadron production in nuclear collisions is the large stopping of the participating nucleons in hadron–nucleus and nucleus–nucleus collisions. This enhanced baryon stopping can be understood introducing new diquark breaking mechanisms in multistring models of hadron production. Here we show, that similar diquark breaking mechanisms occur at high energy even in hadron–ha...

The Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) studies nuclear matter under a variety of conditions. Cold nuclear matter is probed with deuteron-gold collisions, while hot nuclear matter (possibly a quark-gluon plasma (QGP)) is created in heavy-ion collisions. The distribution of spin in polarized nucleons is measured with polarized proton collisions, and photoproduction is studied using the photon...
متن کاملMultiple-Scattering Model for Inclusive Proton Production in Heavy Ion Collisions
A formalism is developed for evaluating the momentum distribution for proton production in nuclear abrasion during heavy ion collisions using the Glauber multiple-scattering series. Several models for the onebody density matrix of nuclei are considered for performing numerical calculations. Calculations for the momentum distribution of protons in abrasion are compared with experimental data for...
